Critical: Read This First
Don't run chkdsk on a BSOD
with NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM stop code.
The NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM BSOD stop code almost always means the drive is failing or has filesystem corruption. Running chkdsk — which Windows often prompts for automatically on the next reboot — can delete filesystem structures it considers orphaned, which are often the exact entries you need to recover your files.
If you're seeing this stop code, do not reboot more than once. Do not let Windows auto-run chkdsk. Come in for a free diagnostic before the drive degrades further.
If CrystalDiskInfo shows "Caution" or "Bad": power off the PC immediately. Every additional power cycle risks the drive failing completely and taking your data with it. Bring it in — we image the drive before any repair work begins.

Safe to try at home
- Run Windows Memory Diagnostic (mdsched.exe) for BSOD — it won't touch your data
- Check CrystalDiskInfo (free) for drive health — look for Caution or Bad status
- Use HWMonitor to check CPU temperatures — above 90°C under load is a problem
- Check Task Manager for high CPU or memory usage by specific processes
- Reseat RAM sticks (power off first) if you get memory errors
Bring to us instead
- Any BSOD that recurs after a restart — don't guess at the cause
- A PC that powers on but shows nothing on screen — don't swap components blind
- Drive showing Caution or Bad in CrystalDiskInfo — don't run chkdsk, come in
