Starting a RAID rebuild
without imaging first can destroy everything.
The most destructive action after a RAID failure is starting a rebuild on a degraded array. If a second drive is marginal β and it often is, because drives of the same age and batch fail close together β the rebuild process will overwrite parity data as it runs.
The moment parity is overwritten on a second failing drive, the array is unrecoverable. Every write during a running rebuild is permanent. We image every drive independently before any analysis. All reconstruction happens on the copies. The originals are never touched.
Note: Controller failure without physical drive failure is one of the most recoverable enterprise scenarios β the drives are untouched. Do not swap controllers before calling us.

What To Do (And Not Do)
When a Server or NAS Fails
The wrong action in the first hour after a RAID failure can turn a recoverable situation into a permanent data loss. Read this before touching anything.
- Power off the array immediately β continued writes increase overwrite risk
- Document the exact array config: RAID level, drive order, stripe size if known
- Call RecoveryMaster before attempting any rebuild β 604-767-1701
- Keep all member drives together and in order β don't swap or rearrange them
- Note any error messages, RAID controller codes, or event log entries
- Attempt a forced RAID rebuild β a failed rebuild can wipe parity data permanently
- Add a "hot spare" hoping it auto-rebuilds β this frequently makes recovery impossible
- Run fsck or chkdsk on an array member β these tools are designed for standalone drives only
- Ship drives without marking their slot positions (Disk 0, 1, 2β¦) β order is critical
- Panic-copy files to another array member β always use a clean, separate external drive
