Post-2018 MacBooks solder NAND directly to the logic board with T2 or Apple Silicon encryption. Recovery requires component-level board work — we are one of the few BC labs with this capability fully in-house. Success depends on board integrity.

We image the drive sector-by-sector using PC-3000, DDI, or UDMA-based cloning tools onto a clean donor medium. Your original drive is never written to during recovery.

Do these things
- Power off the laptop immediately — hold the power button until it shuts down
- Remove the battery if accessible (older laptops with removable batteries)
- If you hear clicking: do not power the laptop back on under any circumstances
- Check if files are also in OneDrive, iCloud, Google Drive, or Dropbox backup
- If you had a water spill: remove the case, do not plug it in to charge
- Note how many times the laptop has been turned on since the failure — this helps diagnosis
Never do these things
- Do not shake or tilt a clicking hard drive — every movement risks more platter contact
- Do not open the laptop and attempt to remove a clicking drive yourself — cleanroom required
- Do not use data recovery software (Recuva, Disk Drill) on a physically failing drive
- Do not reinstall Windows or macOS — this overwrites recoverable data
- Do not plug in or charge a water-damaged laptop — current accelerates corrosion
- Do not attempt chkdsk on a failing drive — it triggers overwrites and can cause permanent loss

Yes — in most cases. A laptop that won't power on usually has a board-level failure, not a storage failure. We remove the drive and assess it directly. If the drive is fine, your data is intact. This is one of our most common intake scenarios.
Not necessarily — but every power cycle reduces the chances. Turn it off immediately and do not turn it on again. The read/write heads are physically striking the platters — each additional spin risks scoring them permanently. Bring it in today.
Yes, though it's complex. The T2 and Apple Silicon chips hold the decryption key — recovery requires component-level logic board work. We do this in-house in Surrey. Success depends on the extent of board damage, and we'll tell you honestly after the free assessment.
Possibly — but only if you stopped using the laptop immediately after the format. On SSDs, TRIM runs in the background and permanently erases formatted sectors. The longer the laptop has been on since the format, the less is recoverable. Power it off right now if it's still running.
