Stop using the device immediately
Every time you power on a clicking or grinding drive, the failed read/write heads scrape against the platters — permanently destroying more data. On an SSD, writes can overwrite cells containing your files. The most common mistake: rebooting over and over hoping it'll work.
Do: Power off, unplug, and bring it in. Do not attempt any self-recovery until you've spoken to us.

Common Mistake
Don't run recovery software on a physically failing drive
Consumer recovery tools like Recuva or Disk Drill are designed for logical failures only — deleted files, accidental formats. If your drive is making noise, running hot, or not detected, running software forces more reads on already-damaged heads and platters. This is the #1 cause of unrecoverable data.
Rule: Noise = physical failure = no software. Bring it straight to the lab.

Water Damage
Wet phone or laptop? Do not charge it.
Water alone doesn't destroy data — powering on a wet device does. Electricity + water = short circuits on the logic board. If your phone or laptop got wet, power it off immediately, remove the battery if possible, and bring it in dry. Time matters: corrosion starts within hours.
Do: Keep it off. Do not put it in rice (ineffective). Bring it in within 24 hours for best results.

Deleted or formatted? Most of it is still there.
When you delete a file or format a drive, the data isn't erased — just the pointer to it is removed. The file content stays on the physical medium until it's overwritten by new data. Stop writing new files to the drive and contact us. The window to recover is longer than most people think.

A drive that's already damaged needs extra protection in transit. Wrap in anti-static bubble wrap (not regular — it builds static). Double-box it with 3–5cm of padding on all sides. Mark "FRAGILE — ELECTRONIC DEVICE" clearly. Never ship via standard letter mail.
